The Beat of the City: Lefebvre and Rhythmanalysis

This paper explores Henri Lefebvre's notion of "rhythmanalysis" and suggests how it may apply to the critical study of music and urban society. Lefebvre's ideas on rhythm and cyclical time are presented in the context of his larger works, particularly the 3 volumes of his _Critique of Everyday Life_. Although Lefebvre wrote nothing about the rhythmic sensibility of West African culture or its influence in Afro-American music, I argue that his ideas can illuminate the social relations between various forms of popular music and the experience of urbanization.
