Stalinism in Art and Architecture, or, the First Postmodern Style

Ross Laurence Wolfe

An essay in the form of a book review, covering two classics of late-Soviet interpretation by Vladimir Paperny and Boris Groys (both of which have recently been republished). These represent an immanent attempt to account for the transition from the early Soviet avant-garde to socialist realism in art and neoclassicism in architecture. I argue that these works retain their relevance today insofar as they were dealing with an historical sequence that unfolded far ahead of its time, insofar as Stalinism in art and architecture can be said to represent the first postmodern style.
